WIP - How I Spent the Last Weekend

I enjoyed my sewing weekend oh so much! I'd assembled my squares into this top on Saturday but wasn't quite convinced yet. It was small-ish, clocking in at 78,5 cm² / 31'' inch², and I didn't want to distort the square blocks too much with the 1 cm wide binding I plan on making.

So I had to add a border and bring up the size to healthy 88 cm² / 34 ⅔ inch². I put my tag in the bottom right corner. The red dots really pop out this pic.

I chose this flannel for the backing. So soft and perfect for this quilt. T is a tiny baby boy and I want this quilt to be extra cuddly.

Since I didn't feel like jumping right into quilting once I'd spray basted the quilt, since I still had a lot of squares left and since there's another little baby boy, little D, that hasn't received a birthday gift yet because I've been way too busy last year (he's a November babe), not to mention that his elder brother got a me-made quilt a little over two years ago (I feel like I've come such a long way since then!), and since this pattern is way too much fun and so quick to sew (whew, that's a lot of "sinces"), well, since there were a ton of reasons and no objections I simply made another quilt top.

I love it! I love how different both of them look despite the similar colour scheme of the squares. I love them so much more than the original quilt I intended to make eight months ago which proves that breaks are sometimes just the right thing for our creativity.

I hope little T and D will love their quilts and I hope I can gift both of them in person during my trip to the UK in a couple of weeks. I booked my flights yesterday and am soo excited to see so many of my friends and their boys. It'll be just wonderful.

Has It Really Been A Week?

I've been away but for good reasons like collecting job interviews (one more on Tuesday and Thursday each, wish me luck!) and spending a long weekend at my parents which was absolutely wonderful. There I even had time to get on with my knitting. Here's my scarf / shawl at 20 cm after the first ball of wool and three pattern repeats. Don't be fooled, it's actually a rich black without so much as a hint of blue.

Two more rattle-filled monsters (check out RevoluzZza's tutorial) were finished last Thursday for my friend J who will gift them to toddlers in her circle of friends. I cannot get enough of these little cuties.

That's it for the moment but hopefully I'll be back with more finishes and good news soon. I'll try to catch up with you guys over the week, too, but please don't be mad if it takes a little longer.

Taking a Break

I'm in a bit of a sewing and blogging slump. There's so much I'd love to do but there's so much else I've got to do first that I feel a tad overwhelmed and end up not really sewing. Most importantly I'm busy scouring job ads and fine tuning my applications. On top of that I'm dealing with a high migraine frequency, whether that's due to the weather changes, the stress, the too long hours in front of the screen, or the sniffles I caught... Most likely it's a combination of all of the above and I know it's going to abate but there's a few things I can do to actively improve the situation rather than whine.

Sigh... I'll significantly reduce my funsies online time for at least a week to give my eyes a rest and free up time for walks in the park and exercise after the day's work. So please don't think I go all silent on you, friends, and won't ever return. I will and I will still answer mails. I just need to prioritise at the moment, reschedule and re-energise, spend a little less time reading and commenting in blogland.

Not going without a sneak peak of something that will finally be finished during this break, though.

I scored some Prym press studs on the cheap for the bibs.

Still not cheap cheap, true, but cheaper than usual because these are way old. The packaging still says "Made in W.-Germany" and I haven't seen four-digit postcodes since 1993! But hey, press studs don't mold or suddenly disintegrate, do they?

Show and Tell Tuesday - Return of the Sewing Machine

We got our new stove today. The one already in the flat was leaky and has been replaced by the landlord. Yay for being able to cook again, we've been relying on microwaved food for too long. Afterwards I finally broke out my darling sewing machine. Been missing this good friend!

First post-moving job was nothing fancy, I fear, just shortening some cheap white Ikea curtains. In our old Berlin flat we had slightly see-through magenta-coloured curtains in our living room and that was it. The flat was in the fourth storey and there were no buildings on the other side of the street. Our new flat, however, is on the ground floor at a large crossing with a broad pavement, so we need more privacy during the day but especially in the evenings. As spring is finally showing its beloved sunshine-y face we can also make do with the shade it provides for the telly and laptop screens.

Hmm, still a good couple of hours to while away. Time to get more creative than shortening curtains, methinks.
